Introducing the Meteor-Optic MCS002, the precision laboratory barometer from Meteormetrics Limited.

Designed to provide a precision mercury-free alternative to the Fortin barometer, the Meteormetrics MCS002 provides an affordable replacement for mercury-containing barometers while maintaining precision and providing greatly enhanced readability.

Set in oak and engineered in borosilicate glass and polished brass the MCS002 barometer is an instrument built to modern specifications but with all the best features of traditional craftsmanship.

Principle of Operation.

The MCS002 Laboratory Air-Barometer or Sympiesometer depends for its operation on the precise measurement of a fixed volume of air retained in a vessel above a column of fluid supported by the atmospheric pressure. As the latter varies, the captive gas is compressed or rarified and the barometric fluid level in the column varies accordingly. At constant temperature, this height is very nearly proportional to the atmospheric pressure, there being a small further term varying as the square of the pressure.

Temperature, however has a large effect, but which can be allowed for precisely by the incorporation of sliding scale which is adjusted to the thermometer thread before a reading is taken. In the MCS002, this sliding scale runs in a vertical track alongside the thermometer and the barometric column. It is retained in the track magnetically and can be moved to align an index with the thermometer thread, after which the atmospheric pressure can be read directly from the position of the barometric fluid against the pressure scale.

Calibration and Performance

The precision and linearity of the MCS002 Laboratory Sympiesometer are demonstrated by the above calibration plot obtained by comparing an MCS002 instrument with an NPL calibrated Meteor2000WXDL. If the instrument is set correctly at 1000mB, the readings will be correct to within 1mB between 975mB and 1025mB even if no calibration correction is applied. With the calibration correction, the precision will be about +/- 0.2 mB across the entire range.

REPLACING A FORTIN BAROMETER
The Meteormetrics MCS002 is a precision laboratory replacement for traditional mercury-containing instruments such as the Fortin Barometer. The MCS002 offers a number of advantages over the corresponding mecury-based device, the least of which is that it contains non-toxic barometric and thermometric fluids instead of mercury, and perhaps the greatest of which is its enhanced readability and resolution. The MCS002 has a working scale four times longer than its Fortin counterpart making it ideal for educational use in schools and universities. It also offers comparable accuracy.
Non-mercury based barometers have a long and distinguished scientific and meteorological history.
Please see our knowledgebase which gives technical information on these instruments and their performance. If you would like to replace your existing Mercury barometer with this precision non-mercurial instrument, please get in touch with Meteormetrics Limited on 0131 208 0402, for further information and to discuss the options.
